Christopher Stead

Professor Christopher Stead carries on the great tradition of railway-minded clergymen, combining enthusiasm with learning.

A student of ancient philosophy and Christian doctrine, he has taught at both Oxford and Cambridge, and was President of the Oxford Railway Society.

In this book he describes the development of the steam engine from the Ball of Æolus to the work of Stephenson and Gooch, not forgetting the American pioneers and, most excitingly, throws new light on some of the early machines.
